The traditional approach to high school just doesn’t work for a lot of young adults.

That’s why we designed a program as unique as you. YouthBuild North Shore is different from other schools.

YouthBuild is a workforce development program for young adults ages 16 to 24, who receive hands-on, individualized support, education, training, career readiness, and life coaching.

Through YouthBuild, young people work towards their High School Equivalency Diploma, learn job skills, and become certified pre-apprentice level construction workers, certified nursing assistants, or ServSafe certified culinary professionals.

EDUCATION

YouthBuild provides academic instruction to young people ages 16-24, who are preparing for the workforce or college access. YouthBuild prepares members to take the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET). The education component uses the Common Core Curriculum to provide students with an opportunity to improve their academic skills through small classroom instruction, group work, one-on-one tutoring and team building.

YOUNG PARENTS PROGRAM (YPP)

By providing education, workforce development, and opportunity, North Shore CDC’s Young Parent Program empowers young parents to take positive control over their lives. Through this program, teen parents and pregnant teens have the opportunity to complete their high-school education through the HiSET test and attain extensive vocational training in addition to supportive counseling, life and parenting skills training, job search assistance, career exploration and more.

TRAINING

VOCATIONAL TRAINING: CONSTRUCTION

YouthBuild provides hands on industry recognized training in construction through the National Center for Education and Research Certification as well as certification in the Occupational Safety Hazard Administration (OSHA-10). While receiving credentialing participants also assist with the construction, rehabilitation, and renovation of affordable housing on the North Shore and use their construction skills to assist the community with service projects like Build Day.

VOCATIONAL TRAINING: HEALTHCARE

In partnership with North Shore Community College in Lynn, YouthBuild provides hands-on industry recognized training in healthcare through Certified Nursing Assistant curriculum, First Aid, CPR, Home Health Aide, Hand-in-Hand Dementia. As part of training, members receive real-life experience through clinical hours at local nursing homes.

OTHER

SUPPORTIVE SERVICES/ LIFE-COACHING

YouthBuild provides supportive services for crisis management, problem-solving, goal-setting, and future planning. Members participate in peer counseling, referrals to outside agencies, and life skill workshops, and work with a Life Coach weekly to address past and present challenges and develop a plan for the future.

Members can also participate in either a weekly Men’s Group or Women’s Group, which act as both a support group and an opportunity to share, learn, and grow.

FUTURE SUCCESS (EMPLOYMENT READINESS AND PLACEMENT)

Members work with the Transition Coordinator to prepare for life post-YouthBuild. Through goal-setting, members choose their path in employment, training, or college. Graduates have the opportunity to be placed with one of our Employment or Education Partners in addition to receiving one year of follow-up support and services as well as a lifetime membership to our Alumni Council.
